Dear colleagues and friends of Mark,

It is with great sorrow that I want to let you know = about the passing of our dear friend, Mark Davis, at approximately 8:20 PM,= Saturday 4/13/2013. He left us surrounded by his parents and friends= .

For the past 15 months, Mark fought valiantly agains= t pancreatic cancer. Mark had 18 rounds of chemotherapy in total, sur= prising even his doctors, as he battled with this very aggressive form of c= ancer. Through all of his treatments he never let it get him down. Mark, true to his nature, remain= ed positive and determined throughout his entire ordeal, keeping people inf= ormed of his almost daily status in the manner of a Flight Mission. T= he flight mission status messages were so authentic, some of his co-workers thought that he was providing status for a real lau= nch. Mark never lost his disarming smile, wit, and desire to help so = many in the SLR community.

Mark’s accomplishments to the SLR community ar= e too numerous to note here, but he touched every aspect of the technique f= rom the hardware and software of the ground stations, to the survey methods= , to the retroreflectors, to the SLR data orbital analysis and beyond for both the NASA and NRL programs. He a= lso lead and supported many other projects during his 21 years as part of o= ur SLR family. He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleague= s.

One of Mark’s goals as he was undergoing treat= ment was to attend the SLR Workshop in Frascati. For those who attend= ed, saw a much thinner, but just as engaging Mark Davis. He was also = optimistic about attending the workshop in Japan this Fall, where he was working on abstracts for the meetings. Although h= e won’t be there with us physically, I know that his spirit will be w= ith us as he lives in our hearts and minds.

Mark’s funeral will be in Michigan on Friday, = April 19^th. Arrangements have been made through the Filbra= ndt Family Funeral Home h= ttp://www.filbrandtffh.com/.

In lieu of flowers a scholarship fund is being setup= for Mark’s nieces and nephew.
