Dear ILRS Colleagues:

We have been informed by Bob Schutz at CSR that the planned December
19 launch of ICESat has been delayed. A problem with the launch
vehicle, not ICESat, was discovered during routine launch
preparation. With the approaching holidays and other launch-site
responsibilities at Vandenberg, it will be several days before the
contractor can determine a new launch schedule, but launch will not
take place before January 11. An update will be issued when a new
launch date has been established.

Due to the nature of the ICESat/GLAS instrumentation, the scope of
the SLR tracking support to be requested from the ILRS is still being
determined. As a result, the ICESat technical and science teams, have
requested that only a small set of selected SLR stations participate
during the first few months of tracking while they determine their
full requirement. We will keep you informed.

Best regards,

Mike Pearlman
