Subject: Herstmonceux SLR system - update

ILRS colleagues.

We regret the long period of downtime currently being suffered by the
SLR system of the space geodesy facility, Herstmonceux; the last pass
taken at Herstmonceux was on 11th April 2003. This is by far the longest
gap in our tracking since becoming operational nearly 20 years ago. It
was caused by a series of system failures, the most damaging being a
fault in the telescope encoder system. A recovery programme has been
proceeding well and we are confident that we will begin regular
operations in the very near future; we look forward to resuming our
service to the ILRS.

Regards,

The NERC SGF Team.
