| Content: | ******************************************************************************** SLR Electronic Mail 2004-01-31 01:19:00 UTC Message No. 1181 ******************************************************************************** Author: Daniel O´Gara Subject: Closing of LURE Observatory (HOLLAS) at Haleakala Dear Colleagues, Due to declining NASA/SLR budgets, and because of a change in the University of HawaiiÂ’s plans for the Haleakala High Altitude Observatory (HO) site currently occupied by the LURE Observatory (HOLLAS), SLR operations at HOLLAS will cease by May 2004. The end of data collection may occur earlier to allow time for system shut down. HOLLAS will change from a 3 ranging shift schedule to a single ranging shift schedule by February 2004 and will keep this schedule till closing of the facility. Installation of an SLR2000 system at Haleakala is anticipated once the systems are ready for deployment, and a suitable site at the Haleakala HO is located and approved by the University. It is with personal regret that this action is to be taken. The University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy has participated in LLR/SLR since 1972, with my involvement beginning in 1984. HOLLAS has been a major contributor to the LLR/SLR data set, from a strategic location on this planet. The entire staff at HOLLAS wish the ILRS community the very best for the future.
