Subject: KHz Meeting in Graz

Dear colleagues,

as announced in San Fernando, we are organizing now a ”kHz Technical Meeting” in Graz:

Time: Wednesday, Oct. 13th, 14:00 till Friday, Oct. 15th, 2004, 12:00

Earlier arrivals (to spend more nights at the SLR Station) or later departures
- e.g. to have a visit to Graz - are of course always possible.

PLEASE: If you have plans to attend this technical meeting:

=> Inform us until July 16th, 2004 !!!

Just send a short notice - together with any wishes / suggestions - to me.
We intend to send all following circulars only to those who have ”registered” by this date.

Goals of this technical meeting:

=> Encourage SLR Stations to upgrade to kHz operation;
=> Assist SLR stations during such an upgrade;;
=> Demonstrate on an existing example (Graz) how it COULD be done;
=> Identify possible OTHER solutions for kHz problems;
=> Point out things which already have proven NOT to work with kHz !

Agenda: Not (yet) fixed; but intended / suggested topics (we are open for any other ideas!):

=> Hardware:

- kHz Lasers; possible hardware solutions;
- Mount / Tracking: Pointing Requirements; Point-Ahead issues;
- Event Timers; Range Gate Generator; PC / Control System;

=> Software:

- Operational Systems; Languages; Speed requirements;
- Methods and algorithms;
- User Interface in Graz: kHz SLR for untrained observers;
- Return Identification / Noise Rejection;
- Automatic routines;

=> How to Avoid Overlaps between Laser Firing and Return Photons;

=> Data Handling with kHz returns;

- Storing kHz data in Real Time; Storage of selected points;
- Noise removal; NP formation with k Points/NP;

Everybody, who is interested, is welcome to participate; but just keep in mind:

=> It is a technical meeting; that means we will go into any details as far as desired / possible;
=> It will be a WORKSHOP; with questions, answers, discussions;
=> If presentations: Only to explain solutions, and mainly to trigger discussions !

Looking forward to see you in Graz !

Georg Kirchner / Franz Koidl / SLR Graz
