Restart of ERS-1 SLR Tracking
=============================

Dear colleagues,

Recently ESA has decided to reactivate some instruments of the hibernated
ERS-1 satellite in order to have the last Tandem Phase with ERS-2 before
ERS-1 will be totally off. As this Tandem Phase is dedicated to SAR operations
there is a strong dependance on the readiness of the DLR/GFZ SAR antenna in
Central Asia, which will be operational in Bishkek in about two weeks. The
length of the tandem operations will be some months depending on the health
of the now about 7 years old ERS-1 satellite.

In order to make full use of the acquired data ERS-1 orbit information of
high quality is required. This can only be achieved with SLR tracking.
As the radar altimeter will not be switched-on, SLR is the only precise
tracking information.

Therefore we asked you, also in agreement with the CSTG SLR/LLR Steering
Committee, to participate in the ERS-1 SLR tracking as much as possible (same
priority as ERS-2)
-----------------------------
starting from July 20th, 1998.
-----------------------------
As in the past GFZ/OP will provide the orbit predictions for ERS-1 through
the usual channels.

We know that there are quit a number of tracking activities, but we should
not miss this last opportunity for tandem operations of two almost identical
spacecrafts.

Best regards
Chris Reigber
