Subject: bias vs intensity 2004-2005

Dear Colleagues (esp Stations),

In Eastbourne, we presented the ´range vs intensity (returns per
normal point bin)´ for 20 stations, using half-year SLR data.
For completeness, after coming back from UK, we recomputed it
using one-year SLR data from Oct 04 to Sep 05. Also, we included
25 stations this time.

The updated result is now available at:
http://www2.nict.go.jp/ka/control/pod/bias-intensity-0405.pdf

The three graphs on the top of each page show the mean of post-fit
residuals with respect to the number of returns per normal point bin
which is very likely to be related to the signal intensity. Ideally
these points should be FLATLY aligned at zero (= no intensity
dependence).

It is recommended that each station strives to reduce such a
systematic range error. Note that this analysis is not 100%
(possibly underestimated). Therefore, it is important for stations
to perform an ´on-site´ range variation test by changing the optical
intensity of satellite-retroreflected pulses coming into the detector.
