Subject: 7119 HA4T: Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii: TLRS-4 SLR Data Release

Dear Colleagues,

NASA and the University of Hawaii, Institute for Astronomy, are pleased
to announce that the Transportable Laser Ranging System (TLRS-4),
located on the summit of the Haleakala volcano on Maui, Hawaii, has
begun operations. NASA decided to use TLRS-4 to continue SLR
observations in this critical global location in 2005 after the closure
of the HOLLAS SLR station in 2004. After more than a year of
preparations, the TLRS-4 system is now producing high quality data. The
University of Hawaii crew, as well as Honeywell Technical Solutions
Inc.(HTSI) engineers, have obtained over 120 SLR passes since the end of
October. This data has been released for your evaluation. The TLRS-4
was formally surveyed in September, and preliminary survey information
is available in the TLRS-4 site log available on the CDDIS:

http://ilrs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/stations/select.cgi?order=by_site_name
&site_code=HA4T&site_name=Haleakala%20%28TLRS4%29&pad_id=7119&tab_id=sit
elog

A formal survey report will be released in the near future.

We would request that analysts provide information about the quality
TLRS-4 SLR data to myself as well as the HTSI team:
Julie Horvath - julie.horvath@honeywell-tsi.com
Bud Donovan - Howard.donovan@honeywell-tsi.com
Dennis McCollums - Dennis.mccollums@honeywell-tsi.com

We would like to thank the University of Hawaii and the HTSI teams for
doing an excellent job bringing the TLRS-4 on-line at the summit, and we
look forward to high quality SLR once again from Haleakala.

Thank you,

David L. Carter
