SESSION 1:
Reference frames implementation for geoscience´s applications:
From local to global scales

IAG Commission 1 activities and objectives are to deal with theoretical
aspects of reference systems and the practical applications for their
realizations as well as applied researches. This session is devoted to
studies related to theoretical definition of reference systems and
frames and their practical determination as well as their relation
to the interpretation of natural phenomena. A large number of
permanent and continuous GPS networks are currently operating
worldwide for geophysical and geodynamic studies. Station positions
determination as a function of time using GPS data is crucial for these
geoscience´s applications and requires precise definition of the
underlying Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF). Any bias introduced in
the TRF implementation which is due to analysis strategy or technique
systematic errors inevitably lead to misinterpretation of the
geophysical processes. The session is seen as a forum discussion on
optimal strategies of the TRF implementation of national, local,
continental and global GPS network solutions of station positions and
velocities and their integration into the global International
Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). More emphasis will be given to
regional activities where reference frames implementation is involved.
Contributions from Regional IAG sub-commissions are particularly
solicited. Of interest to this session is all the non-linear parts
of station motion, their modelling and consequences to the reference
frame realization, including heaviside jumps (e.g. for coseismic
displacements), annual oscillations associated with environmental
loading cycles, etc. Any other reference frame issues, being
theoretical, practical applications and those related to the other
techniques such as VLBI, SLR and DORIS and their combination, are also
of great interest to this session.
