Author: Carey Noll/CDDIS
Subject: New Computer for the CDDIS

The CDDIS staff is pleased to announce that our SLR data archiving and
processing activities will soon be operational on our new UNIX
platform, a Digital AlphaServer 4000:

Host name: cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov
Host number: 128.183.204.168
Access: anonymous ftp and web

All data filenames are in lower case, with the exception of the .Z
indicating a compressed file. Below is a directory tree structure for
these data.

As of December 1, 1998 the host cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov will be
operational. For the next month or two, we will continue to maintain
the archive of SLR data on cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov by ftp-ing data from
cddisa back to the VAX (host name cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov). Users should,
however, transition their software to use the UNIX host as soon as
possible.

Regards,
Carey.

SLR Data on the CDDIS

The CDDIS provides on-line access to two major types of SLR data:
on-site, or field- generated, normal points and full-rate. The CDDIS
also provides access to an historic archive of normal points generated
from full-rate data.

On-Site (Field-Generated) SLR Normal Point Data

The on-site normal point data are provided in CSTG format and are
archived in daily files, where each file contains all data received
for the particular date of the file; therefore one file may contain
several days worth of data. These data are available within a day or
two of the observation. Furthermore, monthly files (time-sorted and
by satellite) are created from these daily files; in this case,
however, the monthly file contains all data received and archived for
that month. All on-site normal point data (both daily and monthly
files) are stored in separate directories by satellite, yearly
subdirectories under each of these. The directories are of the form
/pub/slrql/satname/yyyy where satname=lageos1, lageos2, starlette,
etc. and yyyy is the four digit year.

Full-Rate SLR Data

In 1996, the SLR/LLR Subcommission of the CSTG recommended
discontinuing routine reporting of SLR full-rate data. The CDDIS,
however, maintains an archive of historic full-rate data as well as
data currently supplied by any contributing stations. Currently, SLR
full-rate data available from the CDDIS are in two forms, both in
MERIT-II format. Data observed prior to 1995 are in monthly,
station-merged, time-sorted files. Data observed after January 1,
1995 are stored in daily files by station and satellite, in
subdirectories by satellite and station, and can be found in the
directory /pub/slrfr/satname/ssss, where satname is as above, and ssss
is the four-digit monument number. SLR full-rate data are provided by
the NASA SLR network on a daily basis; data from cooperating sites are
provided with a several month delay and are not necessarily provided
by all sites generating on-site normal points. The CDDIS staff creates
merged monthly files of these daily data as well, on a time-available
basis; these monthly files can be found in the directory
/pub/slr/slrfr/monthly/yyyy.

Normal Point Data Generated from Full-Rate SLR Data

The SLR normal point data generated from full-rate SLR data are
available for 1988 through 1994; on-site normal points were determined
to be of sufficient quality and thus normal points derived from
full-rate were discontinued. The historic data continue to be
available on-line on the CDDIS in monthly in MERIT-II format, in
subdirectories by satellite of the form /slr/slrnpt/satname/yyyy,
where satname is as above and yyyy is the four-digit year.

Satellite Prediction Files

Predicted orbit (tuned inter-range vector, IRV format) files for most
of the currently-tracked SLR satellites are available through the
CDDIS anonymous ftp site, in the directory /pub/predicts.
