| Content: | ******************************************************************************** SLR Electronic Mail 2010-03-08 17:11:00 UTC Message No. 1846 ******************************************************************************** Author: Wolfgang Seemueller, Laura Sanchez, DGFI Subject: Concepcion Earthquake - SIGAS Mail of March 04, 2010 SIRGAS and the earthquake of February 27, 2010 in Chile On 27 February 2010, at 06:34 UTC (03:34 local time) an earthquake (magnitude 8.8) shook the western part of Chile. The epicentre was located at 35.846?S and 72.719?W in a depth of 35 km. To estimate the impact of this earthquake in the SIRGAS Reference Frame, the DGFI, as IGS RNAAC SIR, carried out some preliminary analysis based on the available GPS stations located in the region. Results show that the GPS station CONZ moved about 68 cm to the south and 282 cm to the west. This big displacement reflects the intensity of the earthquake and provides an idea about its devastating effects. The results presented here are based on observational data of approximately 14 hours. At the moment, the SIRGAS Analysis Centres in Argentina (CIMA), Brazil (IBGE), Colombia (IGAC), Ecuador (IGM), Venezuela (LGFS-LUZ) and Uruguay (SGM) perform detailed calculations to provide greater certainty about the movement of the SIRGAS-CON stations after the earthquake.
