Content:Dear Toshi,

We were very sad to learn about the passing of Dr. Kozai. His work in orbit
dynamics was of paramount importance to the Smithsonian Standard Earth
models and other Earth model developments early in the space age. We also
worked with him on the Dodaira Satellite Laser Ranging Station in the early
1970´s. I remembered his wonderful hospitality when I visited. It was a
pleasure to see him once again at the Workshop on Laser Ranging in
Fujiyoshida.

His impact on space geodesy will long be remembered.

Please extend our condolences to his family.

Dear Laser Ranging Colleagues,

I have to inform you of very sad news. Dr Yoshihide Kozai passed

away on 5 February 2018 at the age of 89.

He is so well known in the field of orbit dynamics and also as

a leading pioneer of satellite laser ranging since 1960's. He later

served as the founding Director General of National Astronomical

Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). He had a strong presence even

after that - many of us remember his appearance and great

speech in the 18th Int. Workshop on Laser Ranging in Fujiyoshida.

More info from NAOJ:

We will miss him so much.

Best Regards,
