SLR-Mail No.2583

Back to Overview

Date:2019-07-11 03:16:46
Sender:epavlis@umbc.edu
Subject:[SLR-Mail] No.2583: Re-relase of WLRS and SOSW SLR data
Author:Stefan Riepl
Content:Dear all,

This message is primarily directed to SLR analysts, however, due to the large amount of data affected we are sending this notice via the widest distribution list of the ILRS (SLRmail).

As some of you are already aware, the Wettzell station suffered a ~1 hPa bias due to the incorrect accounting of the barometer location with respect to the IRP and a slight drift for several years, affecting all data that used its observations to provide met info on their data records. This email relates only to the data from the two SLR systems at Wettzell:

a) WLRS (8834) : start date we were given was 2012/08/10 and the end date was 2019/05/28 (inclusive)

b) SOSW (7827) : since their first release in 2014 and up to 2019/05/28 18:15 UT

All data from these sites spanning the above time periods (different for each one!) were corrected, validated and resubmitted to the DCs with an incremented release flag. At this point the data are available at both DCs, EDC and CDDIS.

Please download the latest release of SLR data that you use from these systems and replace the old ones in your local data bases with the corrected release immediately.

This message is particularly important for the ASC ACs who should use the CORRECTED data for the re-anlaysis we are generating at this time (SSEM PP, final step).

For more details please read the three email messages appended below, where the station teams explain what happened. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the stations for more details.

The 7827 site and history log needed an update, since the
latest calibration of the pressure sensor used at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell revealed an offset of -0.25hPa. A backtracking analysis of the sensor offset revealed a drift of approx. -0.025hPa/year. As a consequence the existing pressure sensor was replaced by a calibrated one on 2019-05-28 18:15 UT.
Data recorded at 7827 after that date is delivered with correct pressure readings.

The updated site log is awaiting approval at the EDC.
We regret for any inconvenience.

Dear colleagues,

The Wettzell Laser Ranging System (WLRS) 8834 had obtained a small system bias in the observations between
2012 and 2019. The error was that the height correction between the pressure sensor and the invariant point of the
system went missing. We have rectified that problem and reprocessed all data files in the respective period. The
corrected files were uploaded to the EDC database. The pressure sensor itself was substituted for a different unit,
which has been calibrated by our national meteo service, prior to the installation. The change of the pressure sensor
took place on May 29, 2019.

The exact period that has been reprocessed is starting on and including August 10, 2012. The last day that needs to
be corrected is on and including May, 28, 2019.

All data from and including May, 29, 2019 onwards have both, the height correction included and read the new pressure
sensor, which is the same sensor that SOS-W (7827) uses.

Kind regards, Ulli
