Dear friends and colleagues!

NORAD gave word to Scott Wetzel that GFZ-1´s decay was complete
at approximately 0100z on June 23rd, 1999.

We from the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) would like to
thank the SLR community for all the strong and engaged support
being given to this mission by the stations, data centers, and
institutions. As we heard from various sides, the mission is
looked upon as being a quite successful one. For the SLR
technique GFZ-1 was quite a challenge due to its extremly low
altitude. In view of new exciting LEO missions to come, GFZ-1 can
be assigned a kind of pathfinder mission for new SLR horizons.
Also the scientific outcome has been given proof. GFZ-1 data
contribute to the solution of coefficients of a spherical
harmonic expansion of global gravity field models up to degree
100 at resonant orders which means a considerable increase in
gravity field knowledge. In addition GFZ-1 data challenged POD
with its surface forces environment. Lately GFZ-1 data have been
used to calibrate and check orbital decay analysis.

We are proud and honored to send this message and look forward
into the next century with fascinating new lessons to learn.

Thank you all again and
our very best regards

Chris Reigber, Head of Project
Rolf Koenig, Technical Manager
