The on-board SAR continues to function well and the Tandem Mission with ERS-2 remains a unique capability, routinely providing data for scientific research. SLR is the only functioning tracking system on ERS-1, so this tracking is critical for the continued success of the mission. ERS-1 will remain first priority on the ILRS Priority List. The request from GFZ is included below. Best regards and best wishes for the New Year, Mike ***** Dear colleagues, First of all we want to thank all members of the SLR community for the strong participation in the ERS-1 SLR tracking despite all other tracking activities. Thanks to your great job it is possible to compute precision orbits for the scientific community. Fortunately the satellite is still in good condition and ESA will continue throughout 2000 to operate the satellite in a Tandem configuration with ERS-2 in order to enable SAR data acquisition from both satellites. ESA plans to keep this situation as long as possible. In order to further support scientific analyses of different kind by Precision orbits, we ask you for a continuation of the ERS-1 SLR tracking activities until the end of 2000 (next milestone in the ERS financing).
