Subject: Announcing a Career Change

Dear ILRS Members

After nearly 40 years in the U.S. Civil Service (all except two years at
NASA) I will be retiring on June 1, 2001. My retirement is not due to any
dissatisfaction with my work in Space Geodesy or NASA but only to the facts
that I have received a very good offer to work in the private sector and I
have reached close to the maximum benefits that can be provided by the
civil service retirement system. I would like to work several years on the
”outside” while I am still in good health and active. Therefore, I will
be relinquishing my post as Director of the ILRS Central Bureau. Dr.
Michael Pearlman will now take over this post and Ms. Carey Noll has agreed
to become ILRS Central Bureau Secretary. You are certainly in good hands
with both of them.

Needless to say, I have cherished my nearly twenty years working with you
and all my international colleagues on our grand quest in Space Geodesy and
particularly in Satellite Laser Ranging. This experience has been the high
point in my NASA career. I am specially proud of the way that the ILRS has
become a strong and efficient operation. I wish all of my SLR colleagues
only the best as you journey on into the future. john b
