Subject: EUROLAS Workshop Proposal

EUROLAS WORKSHOP

”Detecting and Eliminating Errors in the EUROLAS Network”

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

MOTIVATION:
The launch of ENVISAT, with its altimeter calibration concept using the
North-Western Mediterranean basin as a reference surface (see
http:/envisat.esa.int/support-docs/calval/CalVal.pdf - p49 onwards), is
a timely challenge to EUROLAS stations to produce large quantities of
simultaneous, error-free data.

ATTENDEES:
should be closely involved, or otherwise strongly interested, in
ensuring that each station produces the best possible error-free data
from its existing system; and that EUROLAS as a whole can utilise its
unique, concentrated SLR capability to meet ESA´s goal for use of
”short-arc techniques that are based on a geometric evaluation of the
orbits using data from dense SLR networks” which they regard as ”very
useful over the Mediterranean area”.

VENUE AND DATES:
2002 March 11-13 at Herstmonceux Castle. These are the only dates
available to us in the near future. We have access to a meeting room
and on-site accommodation for up to 20 people. Accommodation will be
either single or double en-suite rooms all at a cost of 40.30 pounds
(~65 euros!).

CLOSING DATE:
Please apply by February 11 so that we can finalize details here. We
can probably allow a small number of additions after this date, but it
would be helpful to know by February 11, even if you cannot make a firm
plan until later.

REGISTRATION FEE:
There will be a registration fee, dependent on numbers attending, but
we hope this will be very small.

SUGGESTED AGENDA:
Day 1 pm Detector errors
Day 2 am Counter/Timer/Timing errors
Day 2 pm Errors/Detecting errors in reduction/post-reduction
processes
Day 3 am Other error sources
Simultaneous EUROLAS observing

FORMAT:
We are very keen that this should be very much a hands-on meeting
with a minimum of formal presentations but a lot of vigorous round
table discussion and exchange of ideas.
Define common standards?
Compare observing techniques?
Optimise mutual assistance (hardware, software, NRT info exchange)?

SLR VISIT:
There will be opportunities to visit the Herstmonceux SLR on both
Monday and Tuesday evenings.

STANFORD TIMER COMPARISONS:
We have in the past ”calibrated” our timers by comparing time intervals
across the whole range of those measured in SLR against both PPET and
HP timers. The characteristics of one of our Stanford timers are almost
identical to PPET and both our HP timers. Anyone attending is invited
to bring their Stanford timer(s) with them and we are happy to run our
comparison tests (which are weather independent!) to produce a table of
corrections to put their SR timer on the PPET system.
WE URGE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO TAKE PART IN THE COMPARISON.

We look forward to seeing you in Herstmonceux in March!

Graham Appleby, Philip Gibbs & Roger Wood
