Subject: Envisat Launch March 01, 2002

Dear Colleagues,

Envisat, the most powerful European Earth observation satellite, is
scheduled to be launched on March 1, 2002 at 01:07 UT from an Ariane 5
rocket in Kourou, French Guiana. This satellite is ESA´s ERS-1 and -2
follow-on mission for environmental studies, particularly climate
change. Envisat is equipped with ten instruments; more information can be
found at http://www.esa.int/envisat/.

Envisat is also equipped with a laser retroreflector array and DORIS for
precise orbit determination. It has been requested by the Envisat team
that SLR tracking commence approximately forty (40) days after launch.
This plan will allow the satellite to achieve an operational orbit.

ESA/ESOC will be providing predictions for Envisat to the ILRS during the
mission. Prior to the start of SLR support, ESOC will conduct tests of
their prediction system that may involve several small groups.

More detailed information on the mission including COSPAR, SIC numbers,
and other tracking support information will be supplied as SLR support
draws closer.

Best regards,
Carey, Scott, and Julie
