Subject: Continuation of ETALON Tracking Campaign

Dear Colleagues:

The ILRS Governing Board has approved the continuation of the
intensive ETALON tracking campaign through October 31, 2002 as
requested by the Analysis Working Group. This campaign was initiated
in April of last year mainly for improving the quality of Earth orientation
oarameter (EOP) estimates obtained from SLR observations.

At the recent AWG meeting in Nice, analyses to date showed that the
addition of the ETALON data improved the quality of the EOP results only
slightly (~5%), but further improvement may be reached through
further analysis.

The AWG requested the continuation of the campaign to utilize the data for
other ILRS products such as absolute scale, station characterization,
temporal variations in the gravity field. The results from the ETALON
campaign will be reported at the ILRS meeting in October.

Regards,
Carey.
